Letter from the Director
Hello returning Mt Baker Youth Symphony members and prospective new members!
The Board and I are very eager to meet you and hear your wonderful musicianship again. This year we have many fun, whimsical, powerful, and otherwise interesting pieces lined up for you to play. For the October concerts we are featuring the music of Edvard Grieg, whose most famous piece, In the Hall of the Mountain King has been heard on many video games, movies, and other recognized sites. No wonder--it is so evocative of scurrying underground creatures and some sort of wild battle! We will play the whole suite from Peer Gynnt which has this as the finale, plus Phantom of the Opera suite, which will feature the combined symphonies.
There will be a Saturday Concert at McIntyre Hall in Mt. Vernon, 2pm Oct 27th, and a Sunday Concert at Mt. Baker Theatre in Bellingham, 2pm Oct. 28th. The rest of the season is still to be decided. It appears we will be unable to play at Mt. Baker in 2008 because of their renovations. We are definitely planning concerts for March 15th and May 18th at McIntyre Hall. If there is enough interest, we will do a Bellingham concert in May. We will find a place!
Fidalgo Youth Symphony (FYS) is joining us for all our concerts so that we can perform pieces which demand larger numbers, such as Marche Slav and Russian Sailors Dance (which FYS played this summer!)
This year will be an exciting time as we bring in new members and see our musicians advance at amazing rates! Plans are underway to form and promote small chamber ensembles to perform in various localities, for experience and to promote our wonderful symphonies.
You may join either the Junior Symphony or the Sinfonette without an audition. Entrance to the Youth Symphony requires an audition. This will help our staff to place you in an appropriate group. Singers, please call me.
